One common type of knee injury is a meniscus tear.
What is a Meniscus and where is it located?
The meniscus is a toughened piece of tissue (a type of cartilage), located within the knee joints. They act as a shock absorbers and help to stabilise the slight mismatch of joint surfaces.
What causes a tear?
The most common cause of a tear is a forceful twist of the knee while the foot remains still on the ground. In this type of movement, the force is too much for the meniscus and can result it in tearing. It is more common to tear the inside section of the meniscus compared to the outside. This type of action can happen with event such as landing awkwardly from a jump or a side tackle on the knee.
